Our Story
In Austin, everyone knows "The Weirder, The Better"
At Vinca, we get inspiration from something seen in a dream, misheard from eavesdropping, or just because it happens to be our favorite (hello, tacos).
Back in 2006, while toying with the idea of starting a company, Amanda decided to make something out of the thousands of pounds of small scraps from her family's leather goods factory. There happened to be a large amount of flower shapes left over from a custom job so she used those as the main accent on the first collection. The flowers quickly faded from the catalog to make way for weirder creatures like hammerhead sharks and squirrels, but the flower name "Vinca" stuck.
Since the humble beginning, the brand is now sold worldwide, loved by customers who appreciate quirkiness from Austin to Korea. From making every single piece herself, the workshop now has several employees who work together as a team to produce thousands of pieces a month.
All of our wood and acrylic parts are drawn, cut, and assembled in house. We like to call it "micro-manufacturing" and are very happy to be able to produce domestically with full control over the whole process. The vast majority of our raw materials, including chain, plastic, and wood, are also sourced in the U.S. from our sterling chain to our specialty acrylic.
Here's a brief video on Amanda's (Vinca's owner and lead designer) design process. Spoiler alert! She's a colorblind jewelry designer.
Amanda (owner and lead designer) is our main jewelry designer.
Most frequently asked question? If she went to art school. She's been drawing, sewing, gluing, and building all her life and went for business instead at The University of Texas. She draws most of the artwork!
Kristin is our graphic designer, videographer and newsletter creator. She handles all Vinca media. When she's not hunched over at her desk she can be found watching old-school monster movies, playing her guitar or hiking like hell (my poor knees) through the hillside avoiding brown recluse spiders.
Info about our workshop/retail location:
We are currently in a transitional period with our physical location. We are moving our workshop in the next few months. We will not have a storefront where you can buy our jewelry and we will not be open to the public. If you are in the Austin, TX area please visit Paper Work, Blanton Museum of Art Gift Shop, Book People, Prima Dora, ATown, SFINGIDAY, Wild About Music, Terra Toys and Blue Genie Art Bazaar (Holiday and May Markets). These shops are authorized to sell our merchandise.
If you didn't get to visit our retail shop, here is a look inside hosted by Amanda.
